The Zeeland landscape is characterised by tree-lined dikes, hidden creeks, unending country lanes lined by pollard willows, moist grassland, Spanish forts and fortifications. The excellent cycle route markers and great number of cycle routes laid out by the Tourist Information Centre (VVV) allow you to explore the polders of Dutch Flanders extensively by bicycle. We recommend the Westerschelde cycle route around Terneuzen-Perkpolder (42 km) with its beautiful panoramic views of the Westerschelde.
The School Museum in Oud-Terneuzen has a collection of stationery and other school items from the 19th and early 20th Century. In the impressive Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk you can learn all about the disastrous floods of 1953. You also get an idea of the Netherlands’ never-ending struggle to contain water levels. The Zeeland Maritime MuZEEum in Vlissingen is another interesting museum devoted to water and the sea. This beautiful museum shows you the eventful history of the province of Zeeland and what the sea means to the people of Zeeland. The Zeeuws Museum, located in an abbey in the heart of Middelburg, has an enormous Zeeland heritage collection.
